In the context of dentistry and in particular composite plastic filling materials, there have been some enormous improvements in material science and bonding technology involved in restoring teeth. To such an extent that it is relatively straight forward to enhance the appearance of a tooth with little of no removal of healthy tissue. Teeth can be restored and improved without the need for crowning or veneering in many instances, which increases the probability of maintaining the vitality of the tooth. The tooth nerve can be very susceptible to the trauma and heat produced by excessive drilling, so it's best avoided.
